In late 2006, author Bill McKibben and a small group of college students came together to help jumpstart a broad-based movement to demand action on climate change. We were honoured to be asked to provide strategy and branding for the fledgling campaign, dubbed Step it Up 2007. Little did we know, it would become biggest mobilization on climate change to that point in history.
After the enormous success of Step It Up’s series of successful U.S. days-of-climate-action – over 2000 rallies spanning all 50 states – the campaign team took a deep breath and then came back to us to help turn it into a global movement. 350.org – so-christened because 350 parts per million CO2 in the atmosphere is the safe limit for humanity – has built upon Step It Up's model of creative activism and open campaigning to become a truly global force.
We're proud to have been there every step of the way, contributing strategic campaign advice and design, helping their team build a +100,000 strong network across world. Among many highlights, the biggest one would have to be October 2009, in the lead-up to the Copenhagen Climate Conference, when we provided online strategy 350's global day of action – 5200 simultaneous rallies and demonstrations in 181 countries, in what CNN called the "most widespread day of political action in the planet's history."
