Bill Clinton has dedicated his post-presidency to promoting philanthropy around the world. And he's had some big successes thanks to his connections with top thinkers and government and business leaders around the world. Since 2005, he's been formally convening these leaders under the banner of the Clinton Global Initiative, and in that time, members have made nearly 2,000 commitments – that is, specific steps to address global challenges – which have improved the lives of 300 million people.
Biro worked with the Clinton Foundation to broaden the reach of this initiative, so that individuals all over the world, regardless of their status, could also make commitments and share them online. We designed MyCommitment.org to nurture a culture of giving online, inspiring selfless acts that improve people's lives. And the results are impressive. Through this initiative, there have been: 430,000 hours volunteered, $5 million pledged, and 45,000 items donated.
Participants can post their own commitments and see what other challenges are being tackled in their region, or in a sector that's of particular interest to them, whether it be urban renewal in Detroit, supporting children with HIV/AIDS in South Africa, or promoting fair trade artisans in Brazil.
In conjunction with MyCommitment.org, we also designed a site for Clinton's book Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World. In the book, Clinton offers compelling examples of both citizen and corporate activism through the stories of amazing people and dedicated organizations. On the site, users can share their own stories of selfless, meaningful acts – and browse through stories of others doing the same.
